Description

Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus palmensis, also known as lucerne tree) is a highly adaptable, deep-rooted perennial legume that forms the backbone of resilient, low-input agroforestry systems in dryland environments. Tagasaste supports the establishment of fodder banks for livestock, regenerative and low-input farming systems, soil rehabilitation and structure improvement, wind protection and microclimate buffering, and long-term diversification of farming systems.

Tagasaste is widely recognised for its ability to:

• fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve soil fertility
• produce high-quality fodder with strong regrowth after browsing or cutting
• access deeper soil moisture through its extensive root system
• stabilise soils and improve long-term land productivity

It is particularly well suited to Mediterranean-type climates, where seasonal rainfall and dry summers place pressure on conventional systems.

This kits are designed to support reliable establishment under field conditions, not just germination in ideal settings. It brings together the essential components needed to give Tagasaste the best possible start in nutrient-poor, or variable rainfall environments.

• Trial kit (x 10) @ R190 – for testing species performance or small-scale planting.
• Homestead kit (x 25) @ R350 – for establishing a meaningful planting around a home or smallholding.

A small additional quantity of seed is included to support successful establishment under variable conditions.
